What’s wrong with student progress tracking today?

teach·er ˈtēCHər

noun teacher plural noun teachers

1. a person who teaches, especially in a school.
Teachers spend most of their time teaching children, right? The clue is in the job title.
However, teaching in the modern day has drifted away from such an easy definition. Gone are the days when being a teacher meant standing in front of a class and imparting wisdom.

If you were to ask any teacher how they spend the majority of their time at work, a large proportion will be ready to rant for hours about the sneaky beast that is really eating up their time: admin. Keeping track of the academic and personal progress of a class of thirty students is no easy task but it is, of course, essential to understanding the children you teach, gauging how they’re getting on and if how you’re teaching is working for them. With proper student growth monitoring, teachers can spot those struggling and intervene quickly.

That being said, how teachers track their students nowadays is in no way optimal. Modern student tracking software is notably clunky and rigid, with little flexibility to accommodate differences from school to school or even from student to student. Anyone who has used one of these softwares will know that they feel almost clinical with children reduced to a few tick boxes rather than the complex and amazing individuals they are. Many softwares only offer this kind of summative tracking, simple yes-no questions; however, if you were to ask any teacher, they would tell you that there is so much more to a child’s development than the number they received in a test. Data is powerful, but the kind of data collected and how seamlessly we input that data is what differentiates simple numbers from meaningful insights.
That is what we, at Classify, want to show.
At Classify, we want to support teachers in fostering the development of a child’s personal growth along with powerful academic progress data to give a holistic view of their development both as a person and as a student. We’re building a student tracking software that makes it easier to capture the moments, big and small, that truly showcase a child’s potential.
